CHAPTER 21

The Knighted Swordfish cut through the Atlantic, its helmsman singing loudly with Led Zeppelin. He had wired a speaker to both decks, blaring the music nearly to ear-piercing levels.

Peter winced, the music a little too loud for his liking. On a break from his bartender role, he stood at the portside, looking out at the water. There were a few other boats out, and the beaches were full of bathers, many of whom were swimming as far out as three hundred feet. As he pretended to admire the ocean and all of the festivities, he listened to Kayla chat with her girlfriends behind him.

“Bottom line, I might be able to knock biology out of the way this fall… if I can just find someone to cheat off of.”

“You can’t figure out how to do that stuff yourself?” Candace said.

“I just don’t care about cells and microplasm and stuff like that,” Kayla said.

“You mean mitochondria?” Candace said.

Kayla sat quietly, sipping on her margarita. “See what I mean?”

“Girl, that’s what the class is for,” Candace said.

“I’m with Kayla,” Elaine said. She was halfway through her second margarita already, barely acknowledging the affections of her boyfriend. Peter made a tight-lipped smile. He knew what was going through her head, other than the alcohol, and it was driving her crazy. Part of him was disgusted as well. What was the point of having a boyfriend if you were planning on sleeping around freely? Maybe it was a status thing. Or, judging by her character, Roddy had money, and she wanted to milk him for all he was worth.

“Didn’t you cheat in algebra class too?” Candace said.

Kayla laughed. “It’s only cheating if you get caught, right?”

“Hear-hear, girlfriend.” Elaine touched glasses with her. “Besides, you’re studying fashion design. Why they think you need to understand cellular division for that is beyond me.”

“Right,” Kayla said. “They have no relation.”

Peter turned around. “Not true, really.” All eyes turned to him. Even Lewis was looking down at him, waiting for an explanation.

Kayla smiled, feigning interest. “Oh?”

Their inquisitive glares triggered a mild anxiety spike. All of a sudden, he regretted his spur of the moment interjection. He felt like an unwelcome member of the group who was expected to pour drinks and stand around, making Lewis’ charisma shine all the more.

“Yeah, Mr. Smarty-pants,” Elaine said with a laugh. “Please explain how microscopes and mycoplasma is related to fashion design.”

“Well, uh…” Whether he liked it or not, he was committed now. “First of all, mycoplasma is not. That’s actually bacteria that lack a cell wall around their cell membranes, and they can cause respiratory disorders and… that’s not important.” What was the point? It was obvious she had just spouted out the term because it sounded scientific.

He looked to Kayla. “Biology affects fashion design because people wear clothing made from biological substances. There are plant-based fabrics, like linen. They’re making all kinds of new textiles. Nowadays, they’re using biotechnology to prevent clothes from shrinking. There’s a lot more ‘dumb science’ in things we take for granted than you guys may think.
